Factory Unlock vs R-SIM for iPhone
If your iPhone is locked to a carrier, there are two common ways to use it with another network: an IMEI factory unlock or an R-SIM / Turbo SIM adapter (a thin chip placed on top of your SIM card). Here is how they compare.
How each method works
- Factory unlock: the IMEI is marked as unlocked in the carrier and Apple activation database. The phone then accepts any SIM, exactly like an iPhone bought unlocked.
- R-SIM / Turbo SIM: the adapter tricks the phone into thinking the carrier SIM is inserted. The phone itself stays locked.
Side-by-side comparison
| Factory unlock | R-SIM / Turbo SIM | |
|---|---|---|
| Permanent | Yes | No – only works while the adapter is fitted |
| Survives iOS updates | Yes | Often stops working after an update |
| Signal, calls, data, FaceTime, iMessage | All work normally | Can be unreliable |
| Resale value | Higher – phone is truly unlocked | No change – phone is still locked |
| Upfront cost | Depends on carrier | Usually cheaper |
Which should you choose?
For a phone you will keep, sell or travel with, a factory unlock is the cleaner, permanent solution. An R-SIM can be a short-term workaround when no unlock service is available for your carrier.
